Lip Filler

qd lip filler

Lip filler uses hyaluronic acid (HA) to add gentle volume, shape and definition to the lips. A soft, cohesive gel can build a little fullness, refine the lip border and improve balance between the upper and lower lip. Because HA holds water, it can also make thin or dry-looking lips appear smoother and more hydrated. At QD Clinic in Gangnam, Seoul, we plan the shape with you first, then place small amounts precisely. A session usually takes about 15–30 minutes, and some swelling is normal at first. (Results vary by individual.)

is this for me

Who it’s for

Even if none of these describes you, we will look again at the consultation.

  • Thin lips you would like to add subtle volume to
  • An indistinct lip border you would like to define
  • Uneven balance between the upper and lower lip
  • Lips that look dry or flat and could look smoother

Lips are dynamic and swell more than other areas at first, so the final shape shows after swelling settles. A natural, balanced look is planned with you. Suitability is confirmed during consultation.

start with your concern

Before you pick a treatment name, start with the cause of your concern.

Even a treatment with the same name takes on a different role and scope depending on your current structure, the change you want, what you have had before and the recovery time you have.

  • Where you are now, and where we start

The proportion, the outline and the movement of the lips

  • The change you want, the impression you keep

Lips are dynamic and swell more than other areas at first, so the final shape shows after swelling settles. A natural, balanced look is planned with you. Suitability is confirmed during consultation.

  • How it differs from similar options

These change the lips in different ways and suit different goals — filler adds volume and definition, while the other options use fat or surgery. The right choice is decided after we plan the shape with you.

  • Health information and recovery schedule

Little downtime, but the lips usually swell for the first 24–48 hours and can look bigger than the final result. Temporary swelling, redness, tenderness or bruising may occur and usually settles within about 1–2 weeks. Avoid very hot food, intense exercise and saunas for a day or two, and follow the aftercare we provide.

the principle

How it works

Rather than a still photograph, we look first at expression, overall proportion and vascular anatomy, then set the product, the injection layer and the amount conservatively.

HA filler adds volume where it is placed and is gradually absorbed over time. In the lips, the doctor uses a soft, cohesive gel and places small amounts with a fine needle or cannula — into the body of the lip for volume, or as tiny microdroplets along the vermilion border for definition. Placing border filler in the right layer helps keep the outline crisp without spreading into the skin above. Because the lips move constantly, the shape is built conservatively and reviewed as it settles. HA can be dissolved with hyaluronidase if an adjustment is needed. (Results vary by individual.)

Lip Filler

How it works

  • Water-holding, soft gel

Hyaluronic acid binds water, so a soft, cohesive gel adds gentle volume and can make thin or dry-looking lips appear smoother and more hydrated.

  • Body for volume, border for definition

Small amounts go into the body of the lip for fullness, or as tiny microdroplets along the vermilion border for a crisp edge, placed with a fine needle or cannula in the right layer.

  • Immediate, but shaped conservatively

Volume shows right away, but the lips swell more than other areas at first, so the shape is built gradually and reviewed as it settles over about 1–2 weeks.

  • Temporary and reversible

Over the following months the body gradually breaks the HA down, so the effect is not permanent — and it can be adjusted or dissolved with hyaluronidase if needed.

the qd standard

The same treatment, never the same plan.

Rather than a fashionable name or a fixed package, we weigh the structure found at examination, safety, recovery and the limits within one plan.

  • DIAGNOSIS FIRST

    Cause before name

We first separate out the tissue and the function behind your concern.

  • LESS, PRECISE

    Only as much as needed

Rather than an excessive change, we plan the smallest scope with a clear role.

  • HONEST LIMIT

    The limits, explained too

We explain the change you can expect, the alternatives, individual differences and the risks.

  3. Small amounts, one stage at a time

Volume shows right away, and the true shape appears after swelling settles over about 1–2 weeks. Because the lips move a lot, HA here often lasts around 6–12 months, usually shorter than deeper areas. A top-up is discussed at consultation. (Results vary by individual.)

Plan it with our doctors

Please read this before treatment

Safety & considerations

Possible reactions

  • Marked swelling for the first 24–48 hours, redness or a feeling of fullness
  • Tenderness or bruising at the injection points
  • Small lumps or slight unevenness, which usually settle or can be smoothed
  • A cold-sore flare in people prone to them; very rarely, filler affecting a blood vessel — which needs prompt medical attention

When to take extra care

  • A history of cold sores (herpes) around the mouth — tell your doctor, as prevention may be advised
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding — let us know at consultation
  • Active skin infection, inflammation or a breakout around the lips
  • A known allergy to hyaluronic acid or lidocaine
  • Previous lip filler, a bleeding tendency or blood-thinning medication — tell your doctor

Whether lip filler suits you, and the shape, are planned with you at consultation. Effects and their duration vary by individual, and side effects may occur. We explain the warning signs — unusual pain, or skin turning pale or dusky — so you know to contact us promptly.

what to expect

What to expect over time

A general guide to how the days and months after treatment usually unfold. Results vary by individual.

  1. DAY 0

    Treatment day

Volume shows immediately, and the lips usually swell for the first 24–48 hours and can look bigger than the final result.

  2. DAY 1-3

    Early swelling settles

Most of the early swelling eases within 24–48 hours, and any bruising begins to fade.

  3. WEEK 1-2

    True shape appears

Swelling resolves and the real, settled shape of the lips becomes clear. (Results vary by individual.)

  4. 6-12 MONTHS

    Duration

Because the lips move a lot, HA here often lasts around 6–12 months, usually shorter than deeper areas. (Results vary by individual.)

  5. TOP-UP

    Review & maintenance

Your doctor reviews the result and, if appropriate, discusses timing for a top-up based on your lips.

before consultation

Before you decide, the questions people always ask

  • The lips are one of the areas of the face where swelling shows most. Swelling is at its worst from immediately after the treatment through the first day or two, usually settles within a week, and the shape generally looks settled at around two weeks. If you have an important occasion coming up, we recommend having the treatment at least two weeks beforehand.

  • Please be sure to tell us beforehand. The irritation of the injections can bring a cold sore back, so if you have a history of them we sometimes start you on preventive medication first. If you currently have a blister or a break in the skin on your lips, we postpone the treatment until it has cleared.

  • Yes. What makes a result look natural is where the filler is placed rather than how much is used. We look at the balance between the upper and lower lip, the direction of the corners of the mouth, and how much gum shows when you smile. If you show us photos of the look you have in mind, we will go through it with you and separate what is achievable from what is not.

  • On the day of the treatment your lips are numb and swollen, so it is best to avoid hot food and drinking straws. From the next day most people eat as they normally would. For a few days, do not press or rub your lips, and give lip makeup a rest for about a day.

  • In the early days a lump is hard to tell apart from swelling, so we often watch it for about two weeks. If a palpable lump is still there after that, or if only one side stands out, it needs to be checked. Hyaluronic acid fillers can be adjusted with a dissolving agent, so please contact us instead of massaging the area yourself.

  • Look at the examination and the plan rather than the treatment name. First, what the clinic checks before deciding — at QD Clinic in Gangnam, Seoul, the first thing we look at for this treatment is “The proportion, the outline and the movement of the lips”. Second, whether it explains why it recommends that scope and method, compared with the alternatives. Third, whether it reviews your progress with you when results are expected. Our doctor goes through these three points at consultation before the treatment is decided.
