Skin Botox works not in the muscle but in the shallow layer of the skin.

When diluted botulinum toxin is divided into the shallow layer of the skin, the signals to the sebaceous glands and tiny muscle fibres within the skin decrease, which can reduce sebum production and how visible pores are. A 2024 analysis pooling studies of intradermal injection also reported improvements in sebum, pores and fine lines, but concluded that the studies were small and more research is needed. So QD Clinic describes this treatment as a supportive way to refine skin texture.

How it works

  Diluted, shallow, dense

  Product diluted more than for muscle injection is placed densely, in very small amounts, into the shallow layer of the skin. That is why there are many injection points.

  When signals to the sebaceous glands decrease, less sebum is produced, and shine and pores can become less prominent.

What the procedure is like

• It’s best to apply makeup after the injection points have settled.
• For about a day, avoid rubbing the injection points or using exfoliating products.
• On the day, avoid saunas and hot rooms.

Safety & considerations

Skin Botox is not a use defined in the US approval; it is a method doctors use on their own judgement. Please decide knowing that the evidence is not yet extensive and that effect and duration vary from person to person.

• Q. What is the difference between Skin Botox and Wrinkle Botox?

  Wrinkle Botox is placed in the muscle to reduce expression lines, while Skin Botox places diluted product into the shallow layer of the skin to address sebum, pores and fine texture. Even with the same kind of product, the depth and purpose differ. Because Skin Botox is diluted and placed shallowly, everyday movement of the expression muscles generally stays the same, but we avoid spots close to the muscles used most when you smile.

• Q. Does it work for acne?

  With less sebum, the skin can look less shiny, but Skin Botox is not an acne treatment. Inflamed acne is treated first, and this can be planned alongside as a way to help manage sebum. An analysis pooling studies of injections into the skin also reported improvement in sebum, but the studies were small, so we describe it as a supporting method for skin texture.

• Q. Do the injection marks last long?

  Because it is placed shallowly, small raised marks appear, but they usually settle within a few hours. A bruise can take a few days, so it’s best to avoid having it right before an important event. Apply makeup only after the injection points have settled, and for about a day avoid rubbing them or using exfoliating products.
